"Start children off on the way they should go and even when they are old, they will not turn from it" Proverbs 22:6

Computing

Vision

At St Johns, we want children to be enthusiastic and confident with using technology safely. We aim to provide opportunities to develop children’s knowledge and skills to prepare them for the ever-evolving digital world. The pupils are always encouraged to persevere and evaluate their work to look for how changes can be made.

How we teach computing at St Johns

Our school follows the national curriculum and our computing curriculum is based on the ‘Teach Computing Scheme’. The units of work cover the three main strands

  • Information technology
  • Digital Literacy
  • Computer Science.

Information technology provides children with opportunities to collect and present information, Digital Literacy helps children to think about how we can use technology safely, then Computer Science helps children to understand how technology works and provides opportunities for basic programming.

We have developed our own progression of knowledge and skills so that the children can constantly develop and improve the skills they have already acquired (attached below). We also use Purple Mash to support us with delivering the curriculum and skills required.

In the Early years, the children are provided with different opportunities to use a range of technology including Interactive Whiteboards, Remote control toys, light box and I- Pads.

Online Safety is very important in St John’s. We ensure the children are made aware of the importance of online safety through a mixture of stand-alone lessons and consistently through topic work. We have support from a small group of Key Stage 1 children called ‘E-vengers’ and they work with the computing lead to develop ideas of fun ways to learn about Online Safety.
